Trade-Off Guide
Embroidery vs. Printed Patch
Embroidery is the default for most programs because it’s the most durable application method — thread is part of the hat surface and won’t peel or fade under UV or repeated washing. The constraint is detail: embroidery cannot reproduce photographic images, fine gradients, or text below approximately 6pt. If your logo is a wordmark or a simple icon, embroidery is the right call. If your logo includes a photograph, a gradient fill, or fine linework, use a printed patch instead. Woven patch sits between the two — it handles more color variation than embroidery but less than printed patch, and it carries a premium tactile quality that works well for retail-facing SKUs.
Full Sublimation Under-Brim vs. Solid Color
A solid-color under-brim is the lowest-cost option and requires no artwork file — just a Pantone reference. Full sublimation adds a per-unit cost and requires a print-ready artwork file (see Pre-Quote Checklist below), but it’s the only way to put a brand scene, map, pattern, or photographic image on the hat interior. For resort and club programs where the under-brim is a visible brand surface, sublimation is standard. For uniform programs where the under-brim is incidental, solid color is sufficient.
Bead Buckle vs. Plastic Buckle
Beige and brown bead buckles are natural-material accessories that match the straw aesthetic. They’re the default for resort, beach, and lifestyle programs. Black plastic buckle is more durable under heavy use and easier to source for reorders — it’s the standard choice for lifeguard and outdoor-work programs. Cost difference is negligible; the choice is purely aesthetic and functional.
Polybag vs. Retail Box
Plain polybag is the standard for bulk B2B shipments — it protects the hat and adds no cost. Branded polybag adds a printed header card or custom print to the bag itself. Retail box is the right choice when the hat ships direct-to-consumer or sits on a retail shelf — it adds per-unit cost and requires a dieline file. If you’re unsure, specify polybag for the first order and upgrade packaging on reorders once the product is validated.
Pre-Quote Checklist — Lock These Before Sending an RFQ
The faster you can answer these, the faster we can quote and sample. Items marked Required block the quote. Items marked Recommended prevent revision rounds.
Required:
- Straw material selection (or end-use environment so we can recommend)
- Logo file — vector (AI, EPS, PDF with outlined paths) or 300 dpi PNG at actual print size
- Logo application method — embroidery / woven patch / printed patch
- Pantone reference for brim edge fabric (or physical swatch)
- Chin strap buckle choice — beige bead / brown bead / black plastic / no chin strap
- Order quantity per SKU per colorway (MOQ 50 per SKU)
Recommended (prevents revision rounds):
- Under-brim artwork file (if sublimation) — 300 dpi minimum, CMYK color mode, bleed included; or Pantone reference if solid color
- Pantone references for all brand colors (logo, brim edge, sweatband)
- Hat style and size range (S/M/L or one-size-fits-most; head circumference range)
- Packaging spec — polybag / branded polybag / retail box; if retail box, include dieline or dimensions
- Woven label content — care instructions, country of origin, brand name
- Target ex-factory date or in-hands date
