Straw Hat Material Selection — Which Grass Fits Your Program
Why Choose Our Factory?

Mat Grass
The most common straw hat material and the default for lifeguard and beach programs. Mat grass is flat-woven in dense, uniform strips that produce a smooth, consistent surface with minimal variation lot-to-lot.
Properties: Medium weight (~80–100 gsm equivalent feel). Tight weave with low air gaps. Smooth surface accepts dye evenly. Holds crown and brim shape well under repeated handling.
Best for: Lifeguard hats (UPF50+ when paired with an inner UV liner), resort and hotel uniform programs, structured wide-brim styles. See the Straw Lifeguard Hat for a production example.
Limitation: Tight weave limits airflow. In high-heat, high-humidity environments, consider Hollow Grass instead.
Color: Natural beige is standard. A limited dye palette is available; specify a Pantone reference and we’ll confirm match feasibility. Mat Grass takes dye most evenly of the four materials.

Cattail Grass
A round-stem grass woven in a looser, more organic pattern. The visible texture and natural variation in stem diameter give Cattail hats a handcrafted aesthetic that Mat Grass cannot replicate.
Properties: Lightweight (~60–80 gsm feel). Soft handfeel. Natural color variation within and between lots — this is a material characteristic, not a defect. More flexible than Mat Grass; the brim has a relaxed, slightly drapey quality.
Best for: Fashion straw hats, panama-style silhouettes, beach lifestyle programs where aesthetics lead. Buyers who want premium handfeel at a mid-range price point.
Limitation: Less rigid than Mat Grass — not suitable for structured wide-brim styles. Natural color variation means lot-to-lot consistency is lower than Mat Grass; approve a physical swatch before committing to bulk.
Hollow Grass
Tubular grass stems woven in an open pattern with visible gaps between rows. The highest-ventilation option in the range.
Properties: Lightest weight (~50–70 gsm feel). Maximum airflow through the crown and brim. The open weave gives a distinctive, airy look that reads as premium in outdoor and festival contexts.
Best for: Hot and humid climates, summer festival merchandise, cowboy hat silhouettes, outdoor work hats where breathability is the primary requirement.
Limitation: Weave gaps reduce UV blocking. Hollow Grass alone does not qualify for UPF50+ programs. A UV liner can be added, but this partially offsets the ventilation advantage. If UPF50+ is a hard requirement, Mat Grass or Mixed with a liner is the correct path. Raw material cost per kg is higher than Mat Grass.

Mixed Grass (Mat + Cattail)
A hybrid weave that combines Mat Grass as the primary body with Cattail accent rows (or vice versa, depending on the design brief). The two-tone weave creates visual depth that neither material achieves alone.
Properties: Medium weight, balanced between the two component materials. The surface texture varies by weave ratio — a Mat-dominant mix reads as structured with texture accents; a Cattail-dominant mix reads as organic with defined rows.
Best for: Branded retail SKUs that need a distinctive look without committing to a single premium material. Mid-tier resort lines where visual differentiation from commodity straw hats matters.
Limitation: The hybrid weave is slightly more complex to set up on the loom. For very large orders (10,000+ units), this adds a small lead-time buffer — flag early if your timeline is tight.

*UPF ratings depend on weave density plus liner combination. Verified UPF50+ requires the inner UV liner on Mat Grass or Mixed. Hollow Grass does not achieve UPF50+ without a liner, and adding a liner significantly reduces its ventilation advantage. Confirm UPF requirements at the RFQ stage.

What Our Clients Say
Elena R.
Sourcing Manager, Madrid Fashion Group
Finding a factory that offers multiple natural straw options with flexible MOQs was a challenge until we found this team. Their MOQ 50 policy allowed us to test three different designs for our summer collection without heavy inventory risk. The 3-day sample turnaround was incredibly impressive.
Hans
Lead Distributor, Berlin Lifestyle Brand
The biggest headache in overseas sourcing is usually customs. This team handled everything via DDP (Delivered Duty Paid). No hidden fees, no paperwork, and no delays at the border. The pallets of lifeguard hats arrived directly at our warehouse in Berlin in perfect condition—not a single brim was crushed during transit.
Jennifer Chen
Product Developer, Sydney Outdoor Gear
Consistency is the hardest part of large-scale straw hat production, especially with hand-woven items. We provided a complex Tech Pack, and their engineering team executed the weave patterns and branding density perfectly. Out of 22,500 units, the quality of the first hat matched the last. Their QC process is truly world-class.
